Sunshine Girls settle for Commonwealth silver after New Zealand repeats final triumph

Jamaica's quest for a breakthrough Commonwealth Games netball title ended just one victory shy of history on Sunday, as New Zealand produced a composed performance to defeat the Sunshine Girls 56-48 in the championship match at the Hydro Arena.

A day after stunning powerhouse Australia to reach their first-ever Commonwealth Games final, the Sunshine Girls were unable to reproduce the same level of execution against an experienced New Zealand outfit, settling instead for a hard-earned silver medal, the nation's best finish after narrowly missing out on gold for the second consecutive edition of the Commonwealth Games.

The victory also marked New Zealand's second triumph over Jamaica in the tournament, reaffirming the Silver Ferns' status as the competition's most consistent side.

Nweke powers New Zealand to victory

The decisive factor was the brilliance of New Zealand goal shoot Grace Nweke, whose clinical finishing continually frustrated Jamaica's defensive unit.

Nweke converted 48 of her 54 attempts, while Georgia Heffernan provided valuable support by sinking eight of her nine shots as the Silver Ferns maintained control throughout the contest.

Jamaica received another dependable display from veteran shooter Romelda Aiken, who finished with 32 goals from 36 attempts, while Shanice Beckford added 16 goals from 18 shots in an efficient offensive effort.

Early deficit proves difficult to erase

New Zealand seized the initiative from the opening whistle, building a five-goal advantage during the first quarter before Jamaica responded late through consecutive baskets from Aiken to trim the margin to 16-13 at the first break.

The second quarter developed into a tightly contested exchange, with both teams matching each other almost shot for shot. Defensive opportunities were scarce, and only one interception was recorded during a disciplined opening half.

Jamaica injected fresh belief into the contest after halftime by fighting back to draw level in the third quarter, briefly raising hopes of another remarkable comeback.

However, New Zealand quickly regained control, restoring its five-goal cushion before the end of the period and carrying that momentum into the final quarter. The Silver Ferns elevated their defensive pressure and offensive efficiency over the closing minutes, steadily stretching the lead before sealing an eight-goal victory.

Silver Ferns praise disciplined approach

Following the victory, Heffernan credited New Zealand's composure and tactical discipline for overcoming a Jamaican team that had entered the final brimming with confidence after its semifinal upset.

"We knew we had to be smart in attack and not give them too many opportunities because once they build momentum, they're very hard to stop," Heffernan said.

"Defensively it was a real grind, but we stayed in the contest, kept fighting, and after such a huge week, I couldn't be prouder of what we've achieved."

A milestone campaign for Jamaica

Although the elusive Commonwealth gold medal remains out of reach, the Sunshine Girls leave Glasgow with a landmark silver medal after producing one of the finest tournaments in the program's history.

Their memorable run included a breakthrough semifinal victory over Australia and reinforced Jamaica's standing among the world's elite netball nations, providing further evidence that the Sunshine Girls are capable of challenging consistently for major international honors.
