Johnny Grave, the chief executive officer of Cricket West Indies (CWI), announced that there will be no immediate changes to the selection policy and personnel until after the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup, scheduled to conclude in November.
Grave revealed that the selection panels and systems are currently undergoing a thorough review, led by director of cricket Miles Bascombe. However, any modifications to the existing policy will not be implemented until after July 1, 2024.
Regarding the men’s selection panel, Grave indicated that there are no immediate plans to replace Roland Butcher, the Barbados-born England batsman serving on the panel. He emphasized that the selection process for the upcoming T20 World Cup will involve input from head coach Daren Sammy, incumbent T20I captain Rovman Powell, and lead selector Desmond Haynes.
Plans to introduce a new selection system post-World Cup
Grave highlighted the recent successes of the West Indies team, including notable victories against South Africa, India, and England. He expressed optimism about the team’s prospects leading into the World Cup, indicating a preference for a settled squad barring injuries.
While acknowledging the expiration of Haynes’ contract at the end of June, Grave outlined plans to introduce a new selection system post-World Cup. This comprehensive overhaul is expected to include revisions to the selection policy and the composition of selection panels.
Grave’s statements underscore the CWI’s commitment to strategic planning and the importance of stability within the team structure during the upcoming World Cup campaign. As the tournament approaches, fans await further developments regarding CWI’s selection policies and personnel changes.
