In the annals of Olympic history, only six athletes have achieved the remarkable feat of winning four gold medals in the same individual event.

Among them are illustrious names such as U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps, athletics icons Carl Lewis and Al Oerter, Denmark’s sailing legend Paul Elvstrom, Japan’s revered wrestler Icho Kaori, and Cuba’s greco-roman wrestling sensation, Mijain Lopez.

Among these exceptional athletes, only one remains in competition with a chance to etch his name as the most successful athlete in Olympic history by securing a fifth gold medal in the same individual event at Paris 2024.

Mijain Lopez, following his fourth Olympic gold triumph at Tokyo 2020, embarked on a hiatus of over two years to contemplate his future in the sport. Speculation swirled during his break, with many speculating that the four-time Olympic champion and five-time world and Pan American champion had retired.

Return to rigorous training

However, Lopez’s enduring passion for wrestling and his unwavering dream of capturing a fifth Olympic gold medal compelled him to return to rigorous training, setting his sights firmly on the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Originally planning to compete at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games as part of his preparations, unforeseen circumstances, including the passing of his father and other physical factors, led him to withdraw from the Chilean event, focusing exclusively on the Olympic Games.

At the outset of 2024, he embarked on an intensive training regimen, commencing with a training camp in Croatia. In the weeks ahead, he will continue his preparations in Bulgaria.

Reflecting on his return to training, Lopez shared, “I am very happy with this start to the year. As we say in Cuba, it started very warm. After a long rest, my body feels very good. I am very excited, motivated, and determined to go to Paris to win my fifth gold medal.”

Dagerly embraces the challenge

The opportunity to become the athlete with the most gold medals in a single Olympic event, surpassing luminaries like Carl Lewis and Michael Phelps, does not daunt Lopez. He eagerly embraces the challenge, stating, “That is my great goal, to be the best. Paris 2024 will be something historic and different, a great challenge that I want to take on.

“I hope that many people attend the competition to watch and support me in achieving this significant milestone for world sport. I want all of us to relish and celebrate a new gold medal for Cuba and for me.”

With retirement from elite competition looming, Lopez has set a definitive timeline. He plans to bid farewell to over two decades of victories and triumphs in greco-roman wrestling following his participation in the Paris Olympics. Lopez emphasized his desire to support and share his vast experience and knowledge with younger athletes.

While he doesn’t aspire to become a coach, he envisions a role as a leader and mentor to nurture the development of Cuban wrestling and its athletes.

The greco-roman wrestling competition at Paris 2024 is scheduled to take place at the Campo de Marte Arena from August 5 to 11. Mijain Lopez, often referred to as the “Cuban Giant,” is set to headline the event as he pursues his historic quest to be crowned not only the world’s premier wrestler but also the greatest individual athlete in the storied history of the Olympics.
