MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica — A clean sheet, an electrifying brace from Captain Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, and Siobhan Wilson’s audacious first international goal underscored a commanding 3-0 victory for the Reggae Girlz against South Africa at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Friday night.
The performance earned glowing reviews from head coach Hubert Busby and captain Shaw, who lauded their collective effort and resilience.
“We haven’t done a good enough job at keeping clean sheets in the past, and that was a key part of our success tonight,” Busby remarked. “Preventing the opposition from scoring was critical. This was a complete team performance, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
Shaw, who added to her glittering international tally with two second-half goals, reflected on her return to form and the significance of playing on home soil.
“It’s always special to play in front of fans and family,” Shaw shared. “After working hard during my recovery, I feel ready, but I know I can still improve. Tonight was a step in the right direction.”
Wilson’s magical moment sets the tone
The match began as a cagey affair, with both sides testing each other in the midfield. However, in the 28th minute, Siobhan Wilson delivered a stunning breakthrough, scoring directly from a right-sided corner kick, which was swung in left-footed. The goal, her first in international football, stunned the South African defense and ignited the home crowd.
“That was a moment of brilliance,” Busby said of Wilson’s goal. “It gave us the early momentum we needed.”
Shaw’s second-half masterclass
The second half belonged to Shaw, who showcased her goal-scoring instincts. In the 55th minute, Jody Brown delivered a precise assist into the box from the right, and Shaw pounced, calmly slotting the ball past the South African goalkeeper. The crowd erupted as Jamaica doubled their lead.
Shaw wasn’t finished. In the 82nd minute, she capitalized on a defensive lapse to hammer home her second goal of the night, taking her international tally to an impressive 57 goals.
“Bunny is a game-changer,” Busby said. “Her presence elevates the entire team, and she showed tonight why she’s one of the best.”
Defensive solidity and depth highlighted
Busby also praised the defensive effort, crediting young debutant Lia Brooks, who impressed with her composure and maturity.
“She looked like she’s played 20 games at this level,” Busby enthused. “It shows the depth of the squad we’re building, and keeping a clean sheet tonight was a testament to that.”
South Africa’s perspective
South Africa’s head coach, Desiree Ellis, acknowledged the challenges her team faced but found positives in the experience.
“When you’re playing against a quality player like Shaw, you know you have to be on top of your game,” Ellis explained. “We had a few chances, but when you lose the ball in your half, you get punished. Tonight was a learning experience for us as we prepare for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.”
She also noted logistical challenges, including jet lag and injuries that hindered her team’s performance.
Looking ahead
With momentum on their side, the Reggae Girlz will look to replicate their success when the two teams meet again next Monday at 7:00 p.m., also at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
“This win is about more than just the scoreline,” Shaw said. “It’s about the performance, the teamwork, and the pride we take in representing Jamaica.”
