After a sub-par performance in Oslo, reigning World 200m champion Shericka Jackson aims to make a strong comeback at the Stockholm Diamond League meet on Sunday.
The 29-year-old Jamaican sprinter, second only to 1988 Olympic champion Florence Griffith Joyner in the 200m, is determined to put questions about her fitness to rest ahead of this summer’s Paris Olympic Games.
Jackson’s fifth-place finish in Oslo raised concerns, but her resilience and competitive spirit are expected to drive her to a faster time in Stockholm. She will face tough competition from American Brittany Brown, who upset Shericka Jackson with a 22.32-second victory in Oslo, pushing herself into the Olympic selection conversation ahead of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in late June.
Men’s 100m
Brown is scheduled to compete in both the 100m and 200m in Stockholm. In the 100m, she will line up against Gambia’s Gina Bass, Côte d’Ivoire’s Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith, and Jamaica’s Natasha Morrison. Jackson, along with fellow Americans Anavia Battle and Jenna Prandini, will be Brown’s main rivals in the 200m.
In the men’s 100m, Jamaica’s Ryiem Forde will compete against Japanese sprinter Hakim Sani Brown, Oslo runner-up Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon, and American Kyree King.
The women’s 400m hurdles is another highly anticipated event, featuring a showdown between in-form Jamaican Rushell Clayton and Dutch world champion Femke Bol, who will make her season debut in the event. Clayton has been on a winning streak, with victories in Oslo, Rabat, and the Jamaica Athletics Invitational, where she clocked a season’s best of 53.72 seconds. Clayton will be joined by compatriots Andrenette Knight and Janieve Russell, who completed a Jamaican sweep of the podium in Oslo.
World Championships silver medallist Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands will challenge Brazilian Alison Dos Santos in the men’s 400m hurdles. Dos Santos, currently in superb form, remains undefeated in the event this year, with a season’s best time of 46.63 seconds in Oslo.
Caribbean affair
The women’s triple jump promises to be a Caribbean affair, with world indoor champion Thea Lafond of Dominica, two-time World Championships silver medallist Shanieka Ricketts of Jamaica, and world indoor silver medallist Leyanis Perez Hernandez of Cuba competing for the podium spots. Jamaica’s Kimberley Williams will also aim to improve her recent performances.
In the field events, Jamaican athletes Fedrick Dacres and Danniel Thomas-Dodd will seek to enhance their form in the men’s discus and women’s shot put, respectively.
The Stockholm Diamond League meet presents an opportunity for athletes to fine-tune their performances ahead of the Paris Olympic Games. With high stakes and fierce competition, the meet promises to deliver thrilling athletic action and pivotal moments for those eyeing Olympic glory.
