Bermuda taps elite coaching talent in Andre Coley for North American Cup

HAMILTON, Bermuda — A seasoned Caribbean tactician is set to bring his world-class acumen to Bermuda’s cricket team as they prepare to compete in the inaugural North American Cup. Former West Indies Head Coach Andre Coley has been appointed high-performance consultant, a move widely seen as a game-changing boost for the island nation’s cricket ambitions.

Elite coaching meets ambitious talent

Coley, the accomplished Jamaican coach who helmed the West Indies Test squad in 2023, is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing Bermuda’s performance on and off the pitch. He will collaborate closely with Head Coach Cal Waldron, providing insight, tactical direction, and developmental guidance for both players and the coaching staff.

This strategic appointment emerges from a landmark partnership between the Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) and Cricket West Indies (CWI)—an agreement solidified during the recent ICC Americas Annual Regional Conference in Costa Rica.

“I am pleased to support the Bermuda Cricket Board as a consulting coach during the North American Cup,” said Coley. “Associate nations bring an exciting brand of cricket, and I look forward to working with the board, coaches, and players as they gear up for upcoming challenges.”

A platform for growth ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

More than just a short-term assignment, Coley’s involvement is viewed as a strategic investment in Bermuda’s preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Qualifiers. His presence not only sharpens Bermuda’s competitive edge in the immediate tournament but also lays the groundwork for sustained high-performance systems moving forward.

“Working with someone of Mr. Coley’s calibre will elevate our team’s performance and modernise our high-performance goals,” said Waldron. “His expertise will benefit both the players and our coaching staff, and I hope this partnership extends beyond this tournament.”

The stage is set

The North American Cup launches this Saturday, bringing together five regional teams in a battle of grit and skill: Bermuda, Canada, the United States, the Bahamas, and host nation Cayman Islands.

Bermuda’s schedule is packed with intensity:

  • Saturday: Bermuda vs. Canada
  • Sunday: Bermuda vs. Cayman Islands
  • Monday: Bermuda vs. United States
  • Tuesday: Rest Day
  • Wednesday (April 23): Bermuda vs. The Bahamas

Each match offers a valuable proving ground for Bermuda’s players to put Coley’s insights into practice and demonstrate their readiness for higher-level international challenges.

Elevating aspirations, island by island

Coley’s arrival signals more than tactical refinement—it represents a collaborative spirit within Caribbean cricket, where larger boards extend a hand to rising associates. This synergy could not have come at a more critical time for Bermuda, as they strive to raise their profile on the global stage and build a competitive, sustainable cricketing culture.

As the tournament looms, expectations are high—but with Coley’s guidance and the team’s passion, Bermuda is not just showing up. They’re showing intent.
