Ashley McKenzie has been confirmed as Jamaica’s representative in the sport of judo at the upcoming Paris Olympics.
This marks McKenzie’s fourth appearance at the Olympic Games, having previously competed for Great Britain. With this achievement, he becomes the first male Jamaican judoka to compete at the Olympics.
The confirmation of McKenzie’s qualification ends the Olympic hopes of fellow judoka Ebony Drysdale-Daley. Despite her aspirations for a second Olympic appearance, Drysdale-Daley fell nine points short of McKenzie in the qualification standings. Only one spot was available for a Jamaican judoka at the Games.
Significant milestone
Drysdale-Daley has expressed her disappointment and accused the Jamaica Judo Association of nepotism after she was de-registered from the final qualification competition, the Lima Pan American Games, held on June 21. This decision effectively eliminated her chances of earning a spot in the Paris Olympics.
McKenzie’s qualification is a significant milestone for Jamaican judo, as he will be the nation’s first male competitor in the sport at the Olympics. His previous experience and achievements bring a new level of recognition and opportunity for Jamaican athletes in judo on the international stage.
As McKenzie prepares for his fourth Olympic journey, the Jamaican judo community and sports enthusiasts will be watching closely, hoping for a strong performance that will inspire future generations of athletes.
