Arsenal’s controversial defeat to Newcastle puts Manchester City back at Premier League helm

In a display of sheer dominance, Manchester City reclaimed the top spot in the Premier League table with a resounding 6-1 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s disappointing 1-0 loss to Newcastle handed the defending champions the lead, albeit temporarily, until Tottenham faces Chelsea on Monday.

Belgium’s Jeremy Doku showcased his extraordinary prowess by scoring one goal and providing assists for four others, propelling Manchester City to maintain a flawless record at home this season. This result exerted pressure on Arsenal to secure a convincing win at St. James’ Park if they were to surpass City based on goal difference. However, a contentious goal by Anthony Gordon in the 64th minute condemned Arsenal to its first league defeat of the season, relegating them to third place. Depending on Sunday’s results, both Liverpool and Aston Villa could surpass Arsenal in the standings.

Tottenham, the only remaining undefeated team in the English Premier League, has the opportunity to extend its lead over London rival Arsenal if they prevail against Chelsea. Their upcoming match also carries the subplot of facing former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Mikel Arteta expresses his frustration

Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, expressed his frustration after an extensive VAR review allowed Gordon’s goal to stand, resulting in Newcastle securing a narrow victory. The VAR checks involved assessing whether the ball had gone out of play, whether a foul had occurred, and whether there was an offside. Ultimately, the goal was awarded, much to Arteta’s dismay, who called it “a disgrace” and voiced his disappointment.

Newcastle United had a noteworthy week, securing back-to-back victories against traditional English football giants, as they had previously defeated Manchester United 3-0 in the League Cup. In addition to their club success, Saudi Arabia is now in a strong position to host the 2034 World Cup, with Australia withdrawing from contention.

Manchester United, under pressure, secured a crucial 1-0 win against Fulham thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ late strike. The victory put an end to United’s two-game losing streak across all competitions, providing relief to both manager Erik ten Hag and Fernandes, who had faced criticism in recent times. Fernandes emphasized the importance of the win, acknowledging the club’s need for positive results.

Erling Haaland, City’s leading scorer, was substituted at halftime against Bournemouth due to an ankle injury. Although City manager Pep Guardiola suggested it was a precautionary move, Haaland’s discomfort raised questions about his availability for the upcoming Champions League clash against Young Boys.

Burnley’s poor home form continues

Despite Haaland’s absence, Manchester City cruised to another victory, with Doku showcasing his match-winning abilities, much to the delight of Guardiola, who praised the young talent.

In other Premier League developments, Burnley’s poor home form continued as they became the first team in Premier League history to lose their opening six home games of the season, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. Sheffield United secured its first win since being promoted to the top flight, defeating Wolverhampton 2-1 in dramatic fashion. Both teams remain at the bottom of the standings, with Burnley and Sheffield United level on points.

Everton missed an opportunity to climb the table as Ashley Young’s own-goal salvaged a 1-1 draw against Brighton. The result kept Everton in 15th place in the standings. Neal Maupay’s goal ended a lengthy goal drought of more than 14 months, helping Brentford secure a thrilling 3-2 victory over West Ham, with Nathan Collins netting the winner for the Bees.
