Spearheaded by the Jamaican trio of Shamera Sterling-Humphrey, Romelda Aiken-George, and Latanya Wilson, the Thunderbirds asserted their superiority in a match held at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

From the onset, the Thunderbirds exhibited their prowess, claiming victory in every quarter of the game. Long-standing goal shooter Aiken-George, who entered the match from the bench, delivered an impressive performance, scoring 29 goals from 35 attempts. Meanwhile, the Jamaican defensive duo of Sterling-Humphrey and Wilson made significant contributions, making life difficult for the Giants’ offensive line.

Reflecting on the team’s success, midfielder Tayla Williams expressed her satisfaction, stating, “Very happy with that scoreline, being able to push on over the match.” Williams emphasized the team’s defensive strategy, highlighting Sterling-Humphrey’s exceptional interceptions as a key factor in their victory.

A 12-0 scoring spree

The Thunderbirds’ dominance was evident throughout the match, with their strong start leading to an 18-12 first-quarter lead. Despite the Giants’ efforts, they struggled to penetrate the Thunderbirds’ defense, further compounded when the hosts shifted Georgie Horjus from wing attack to goal attack.

The gap widened during the second quarter, with Aiken-George and Horjus spearheading a 12-0 scoring spree, extending the Thunderbirds’ lead to 37-23 at halftime. The Thunderbirds continued to dominate the midfield in the third quarter, finishing with a commanding 54-36 lead.

In another match, the Melbourne Mavericks staged a remarkable fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the Sunshine Coast Lightning 65-64, securing their first victory in the tournament. The Mavericks outscored the Lightning 19-15 in the final quarter, sealing a thrilling victory in the dying seconds of the match at the University of the Sunshine Coast Arena.
