Sunshine Girls dethroned as Trinidad and Tobago seize first CAC netball crown

Jamaica's Sunshine Girls surrendered their Central American and Caribbean Games netball crown Friday, falling 49-56 to Trinidad and Tobago in a fiercely contested final that produced a landmark first for the Trinidadians.

The defeat ended Jamaica's reign as CAC Games champions after the Sunshine Girls captured the title three years ago in El Salvador. But this Jamaican squad was markedly different from the team that previously ruled the regional competition, with the selection built largely around under-21 players.

Trinidad and Tobago, by contrast, brought greater experience to the championship and maintained an unbeaten record throughout the tournament before completing their run with the most significant victory in the country's CAC Games netball history.

Trinidad seizes control from the start

The warning signs came immediately.

Jamaica struggled to settle during the opening quarter as Trinidad and Tobago imposed its tempo and repeatedly found openings in the Jamaican defense. The Trinidadians raced into an 18-10 advantage, forcing the Sunshine Girls to play catch-up almost from the outset.

Jamaica responded impressively in the second quarter.

The Sunshine Girls found greater rhythm in attack and began to apply sustained pressure, outscoring Trinidad and Tobago 14-11. Their recovery cut the deficit to five goals at halftime, with Trinidad and Tobago holding a 29-24 advantage.

The momentum, however, never fully shifted.

Experienced Trinidadian unit holds firm

Jamaica needed another surge after the break, but Trinidad and Tobago responded with the composure that had characterized its unbeaten campaign.

The Trinidadians stepped up their intensity in the third quarter, adding three goals to their advantage and moving into the final period with a 42-35 lead.

That seven-goal cushion proved decisive.

Jamaica continued to battle until the final whistle, matching Trinidad and Tobago goal for goal in the fourth quarter as both teams scored 14. But the Sunshine Girls could not produce the sustained run they needed to overturn the deficit.

Trinidad and Tobago held its nerve to close out the seven-goal victory and secure its first-ever CAC Games netball gold medal.

Gordon leads Jamaican scoring effort

Goal shooter Simone Gordon carried much of Jamaica's offensive burden, scoring 41 goals from 53 attempts.

Jada Ricketts contributed eight goals from 17 attempts as the Sunshine Girls attempted to stay within reach during the latter stages.

Trinidad and Tobago's shooting was even more efficient.

Samantha Wallace matched Gordon's 41-goal total but required only 44 attempts to do so. Kalifa McCollin was flawless, converting all 15 of her attempts for a perfect 100-percent shooting performance.

That accuracy proved crucial in a final where Jamaica could ill afford missed opportunities.

A new champion emerges

The result represents a major milestone for Trinidad and Tobago, which had never previously won CAC Games gold in netball.

For Jamaica, the loss marks the end of its latest regional reign and serves as a significant learning experience for a relatively young Sunshine Girls unit.

The seven-goal margin ultimately reflected Trinidad and Tobago's superior start, greater experience and ability to remain composed whenever Jamaica threatened to close the gap.

The Sunshine Girls fought back strongly after their difficult opening quarter, but the deficit created early in the contest proved too large to erase.

Trinidad and Tobago's unbeaten march through the tournament ended with the country's first CAC Games netball championship, while Jamaica was left to surrender a crown it had carried since its triumph in El Salvador three years earlier.
