Zimbabwe stun Windies as Gwanzura stars with bat and ball

Nyasha Gwanzura produced a match-winning performance with both bat and ball as Zimbabwe Women secured their first-ever One-Day International (ODI) victory over West Indies Women, winning the second match of the three-game series by four wickets at Harare Sports Club on Sunday.

The offspinner claimed a career-best 4-33 from 10 overs to help dismiss the West Indies for just 139 in 39.3 overs after the visitors chose to bat.

She then returned to the crease when Zimbabwe were wobbling at 105 for five, scoring an unbeaten 18 from 37 balls to guide the hosts to 140 for six with 55 balls remaining.

The result leveled the series at 1-1, setting up a decisive third ODI on Wednesday.

Windies lose their way

The West Indies initially appeared capable of building a competitive total after losing Realeanna Grimmond for four with only nine runs on the board.

Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor steadied the innings, moving the score to 56 for one in the 12th over.

Gwanzura then changed the course of the innings.

She had Matthews caught behind by Modester Mupachikwa for 26, triggering a collapse that saw the visitors lose six wickets for just 32 runs.

Francisca Chipare removed Shemaine Campbelle for three and, two deliveries later, dismissed Chinelle Henry without scoring.

Gwanzura then took complete control, accounting for Jannillea Glasgow for one, Zaida James for three and Aaliyah Alleyne for four.

By the 24th over, the West Indies were reeling at 88 for seven.

Taylor fights, but support runs out

Taylor provided the main resistance, scoring 47 from 68 balls as she attempted to rebuild an innings that had rapidly unraveled.

Ashmini Munisar remained unbeaten on 20 from 45 deliveries, while Afy Fletcher marked her 100th ODI with a run-a-ball 15.

Munisar and Karishma Ramharack added 26 for the final wicket before Ramharack was bowled by Olinder Chare for five.

Zimbabwe's attack was led by Gwanzura, while Mavunga finished with 3-36 and Chipare claimed 2-16.

The Windies' 139 left Zimbabwe with a manageable target, but their chase was far from straightforward.

Zimbabwe stumble after strong start

Zimbabwe's response began confidently as Mupachikwa and Kelis Ndhlovu put together 67 for the opening wicket.

Aaliyah Alleyne finally broke the partnership by trapping Mupachikwa lbw for 38.

The hosts lost another wicket one run later when Munisar dismissed Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano lbw for a duck.

Alleyne then struck again, having Ndhlovu caught for 30 to leave Zimbabwe at 70 for three and revive West Indies hopes.

Gwanzura finishes the job

Josephine Nkomo and Beloved Biza responded with a crucial 30-run fourth-wicket partnership that took Zimbabwe to 100.

The hosts, however, were suddenly under pressure again when Fletcher dismissed Biza for 14 and Chiedza Dhururu in quick succession.

At 105 for five, Zimbabwe still needed to negotiate a potentially tense finish.

That was when Gwanzura stepped in again.

She shared a valuable 28-run partnership with Nkomo, putting Zimbabwe within sight of victory.

Nkomo fell for 30 with only seven runs still required, but Gwanzura remained composed.

Her unbeaten 18 completed the chase and delivered Zimbabwe a landmark result, their first ODI victory over the West Indies Women.

With the series now tied 1-1, Wednesday's final match will decide the contest.
