Young’s unbeaten 67 not enough as rain plays spoilsport in Super50 encounter

In a Super50 Cup match, West Indies Academy captain Nyeem Young's remarkable performance with the bat went in vain as bad weather disrupted their encounter with Barbados Pride in St. Augustine, Trinidad, on Monday.

Facing a precarious situation at 31 for five in the 13th over, Young took charge and played a crucial innings, scoring an unbeaten 67 runs from 89 balls, steering the West Indies Academy to a total of 141 for six in the 39th over. Kevin Wickham contributed 43 runs from 61 balls and, more importantly, shared a vital 93-run, sixth-wicket partnership with Young.

With the game poised for an exciting conclusion, rain intervened, preventing any further play at the Frank Worrell Memorial Ground. Seamers Dominic Drakes (2-10) and Jair McAllister (2-15) were instrumental in early breakthroughs for the Barbados Pride.

Windies Academy’s shaky start

West Indies Academy had a shaky start, losing wickets quickly as Drakes and McAllister made early inroads. Kimani Melius (9) was dismissed in the sixth over, Leonardo Julien (0) fell in the eighth over, and Matthew Nandu (8) was caught at square leg in the 11th over. Teddy Bishop was the next to go, caught at short mid-wicket in the 13th over, leaving the WI Academy at a precarious 25 for four.

However, Nyeem Young's brave counter-attack, featuring two fours and four sixes, along with Kevin Wickham's support, changed the course of the game and put the Barbados Pride on the defensive. Unfortunately, Wickham's innings came to an end when he top-edged a slow sweep at off-spinner Roston Chase and was caught in the deep.

Despite Young's efforts, the match ended prematurely due to rain, leaving an exciting finish unfulfilled.
