Windward Islands Volcanoes’ title hopes dashed as rain thwarts run chase against Hurricanes

In a highly anticipated clash in the West Indies Championship, rain played spoilsport as the Windward Islands Volcanoes' ambitious run chase was thwarted, resulting in a draw against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes in Port-of-Spain on Saturday.

With a monumental target of 416 runs required for victory at Queen’s Park Oval, Volcanoes began the final day at 112 for one, hoping to mount a remarkable pursuit for the regional first-class title. However, their aspirations were dashed as rain intervened, disrupting play and preventing any significant progress in the run chase.

Despite their determination, Volcanoes could only reach 184 for four at lunch, with opener Stephan Pascal adding a mere three runs to his overnight 60 and Johann Jeremiah converting his unbeaten 23 into a valuable 53. The pair extended their second-wicket partnership to 60 before being separated.

Hopes of a possible result

Captain Alick Athanaze's dismissal for eight and Kavem Hodge's ill-fated drive, resulting in a catch at short cover, further dented Volcanoes' hopes of mounting a successful chase. Sunil Ambris provided some resistance with a brisk 32, forming a crucial 43-run partnership with Jeremiah before rain halted proceedings during the lunch break.

Despite the interval, the Hurricanes struck twice on the resumption, removing both set batsmen and reducing Volcanoes to 227 for six, raising hopes of a possible result. However, Shamar Springer's unbeaten 35 and Jervin Benjamin's contribution of 22 frustrated the Hurricanes' attempts to force a victory, as the pair added an invaluable 64 runs for the seventh wicket.

Ultimately, rain emerged as the decisive factor, taking precious time out of the game and denying both teams the opportunity to secure a decisive result. While the draw ensured a stalemate in the West Indies Championship, it also left Volcanoes disappointed, as their title hopes were dashed by the untimely interruption of inclement weather.
