Castries, St. Lucia – Facing an uphill battle in their T20 series against England, West Indies captain Rovman Powell is rallying his team as they head into a crucial third match at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on Thursday.

With the Windies trailing 0-2 in the best-of-five series, Powell emphasized that each game ahead is effectively a final if they hope to avoid their first home series defeat since 2023.

“This series is still alive for us, and it’s about taking it one game at a time,” Powell told reporters on Wednesday. “We just need that win tomorrow to set up an exciting weekend and get back into the fight.” Powell noted that despite the two losses, the team remains “in good spirits and in the right frame of mind” to challenge their formidable opponents.

The West Indies squad is not used to facing such a deficit, particularly on home soil. Reflecting on the unusual position, Powell admitted, “It’s a bit uncomfortable, to be honest. This isn’t a place we’re accustomed to, but it’s also an opportunity to prove our resilience as a T20 team.”

West Indies in a tight spot

Two consecutive defeats at Kensington Oval put the West Indies in a tight spot, but Powell sees the shift to St. Lucia as a chance for a fresh start. “Barbados didn’t go our way, but St. Lucia gives us a clean slate,” he said. “We play England quite often, and we’ve had strong performances against them. This is just another opportunity to show what we’re made of.”

Powell also stressed the need for individual accountability within the squad. “It’s a moment for introspection,” he said. “Every player has to evaluate if they’re bringing their best. We’re in good spirits and had a solid training session today, so we’re hopeful to come out swinging on Thursday.”

The Windies’ bowling line-up will be further bolstered by the return of pacer Alzarri Joseph, who missed the opening two games due to suspension. Powell welcomed the addition, saying, “Alzarri’s presence is a big boost. We needed him in our bowling attack, and I’m confident he’ll make an immediate impact.”
