West Indies secure tense victory over Sri Lanka in ICC Under-19 World Cup

In a nail-biting encounter, West Indies took a significant step towards securing a spot in the semi-finals of the ICC Under-19 World Cup as they held their composure to defeat a resilient Sri Lanka by three wickets in their opening Super Six stage match.

Set a target of 232 runs at Diamond Oval, the West Indies youth team navigated through a challenging chase, ultimately reaching the target with just three balls to spare in their Group 2 clash.

Opening batsman Steve Wedderburn was the standout performer, earning the Man-of-the-Match award for his crucial knock of 61 runs off 71 balls. He received valuable support from Jordan Johnson, who contributed 39 runs off 46 deliveries, and captain Stephan Pascal, who added 31 runs off 26 balls.

However, it was the composed batting of Nathan Sealy, coming in at number eight, that proved instrumental in guiding West Indies to victory. Sealy remained unbeaten with a crucial 27 off 28 deliveries, steering his team across the finish line. Tarrique Edward played a key role as well, contributing 11 not out in a vital unbroken eighth-wicket partnership worth 26 runs.

The importance of remaining positive

Reflecting on the win, opener Steve Wedderburn said, "I feel very good about the win we had today, and this is all leading from the victory over Australia in the second Test." He emphasized the importance of remaining positive and adapting to the situation, praising his team's adaptability.

Sri Lanka, opting to bat first, managed to score 231 runs before being bowled out on the last delivery of their allotted 50 overs. Dinura Kalupahana top-scored for Sri Lanka with 53 runs off 83 balls, while Malsha Tharupathi contributed 42 runs off 38 balls and Supun Waduge added 31 runs from 40 deliveries.

Despite a challenging start where Sri Lanka slipped to 46 for three within the first 10 overs, they mounted a recovery led by Kalupahana. He formed crucial partnerships, including a 51-run stand with Tharupathi, before being dismissed in the 39th over after striking five fours.

In response, the West Indies team made a strong start, with openers Wedderburn and Pascal putting on 48 runs for the first wicket. Wedderburn struck five fours and three sixes in his innings, while Pascal hit five fours and a six before being dismissed.

A few wobbles in the middle order

Despite a few wobbles in the middle order, a valuable partnership of 86 runs between Wedderburn and Johnson kept West Indies in the hunt. However, both batsmen fell in quick succession, setting up a tense finish to the match.

Mavendra Dindyal and Nathan Edward added 31 runs for the fifth wicket, and Sealy's composed batting in the later stages ensured West Indies achieved a thrilling victory.

West Indies will face the Group 2 leaders, Australia, in their final Super Six game on Friday, as they continue their quest for a place in the ICC Under-19 World Cup semi-finals.
