In a day marked by shifting fortunes, Shamar Joseph, making his Test debut, emerged as a standout performer for the West Indies cricket team on Thursday.

Despite his remarkable five-wicket haul, the West Indies found themselves in a precarious position, facing an inevitable defeat against Australia in the Adelaide Test.

Starting the day at 59-2, Australia struggled to 129-5, thanks to Shamar Joseph's brilliant display, dismissing key batsmen Cameron Green and Usman Khawaja. At lunch, Australia stood at 144-5, with Travis Head leading the charge with an unbeaten 41.

Head's resolute innings of 119

However, Head's resolute innings of 119 propelled Australia to a total of 283, giving them a lead of 95 runs. Josh Hazlewood's devastating four-wicket spell further compounded the West Indies' troubles, reducing them to 73-6 by the end of the day, trailing Australia by 22 runs.

Shamar Joseph's debut performance was nothing short of remarkable, finishing with figures of 5-94, well-supported by Justin Greaves (2-36) and veteran Kemar Roach (2-48). Joseph's fifth wicket came when he dismissed Nathan Lyon for 24.

Despite Joseph's heroics, the West Indies' batting order crumbled under Hazlewood's relentless assault. Hazlewood claimed three wickets, conceding just one run. Captain Kraigg Brathwaite (1), Tagenarine Chanderpaul (0), Alick Athanaze (0), and Kavem Hodge (3) all fell victim to Hazlewood's skilful bowling, leaving the West Indies struggling at 19-4. Kirk McKenzie contributed with a brisk 26, but his dismissal further dimmed West Indies' hopes.

A bright spot in an otherwise challenging day

Justin Greaves and Joshua da Silva attempted to stabilize the innings with a 33-run partnership, but Greaves fell to Nathan Lyon on the last ball of the day, leaving the West Indies needing 22 runs to avoid forcing Australia to bat again.

While Australia appeared poised for victory, Shamar Joseph's debut performance shone as a bright spot in an otherwise challenging day for the West Indies. His resilience and skill earned him a standing ovation from the crowd, symbolizing hope for the future despite the prevailing circumstances.
