The United States could hardly have imagined a more spectacular opening chapter to its World Cup campaign.

With confidence flowing, attacking football on display, and the energy of a packed Los Angeles crowd behind them, the co-hosts overwhelmed Paraguay 4-1 on Friday night, turning their tournament opener into a celebration of American ambition.

Folarin Balogun emerged as the central figure of the evening, scoring twice, while Gio Reyna added a breathtaking late strike to complete a dominant victory that immediately strengthened the Americans’ position in Group D.

The result, combined with the quality of the performance, placed the United States in an excellent position to push toward the knockout rounds, with Australia and Turkey still to come in the group.

Lightning start sets the tone

The opening minutes belonged entirely to the hosts.

Before many fans had settled into their seats, the United States had already found the breakthrough. In the seventh minute, Weston McKennie collected possession near midfield and surged forward before linking up with attacking leader Christian Pulisic.

Pulisic sliced through Paraguay’s defensive line and returned the ball to McKennie, whose pass toward Balogun created immediate danger. Under pressure, Paraguay defender Damian Bobadilla inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

The stadium erupted.

The goal did more than open the scoring, it unleashed a wave of American pressure that Paraguay struggled to contain.

United States turn first half into a masterclass

The hosts played with freedom and authority, constantly threatening the South American defense.

McKennie and Malik Tillman produced moments of creativity, including clever backheel passes that opened spaces in the penalty area, while veteran defender Tim Ream controlled possession from the back with composed distribution.

Balogun thought he had doubled the advantage in the 28th minute, but the effort was ruled out after an offside decision involving both himself and Pulisic during the build-up.

The disappointment lasted only briefly.

Three minutes later, the striker was celebrating again.

A superb move down the left involving Antonee Robinson and Pulisic created the opening, and Balogun finished after a slight deflection helped guide the cross into his path.

The Americans were in complete control.

Balogun delivers again before the break

The third goal arrived just before halftime and reflected the confidence running through the team.

Tillman found Balogun on the right side, where the forward powered away from Omar Alderete’s challenge before cutting inside Gustavo Gómez and curling an outstanding finish into the top-left corner.

It was the type of goal that announced a team believing it belonged on football’s biggest stage.

The United States could easily have added more before the interval. Defender Chris Richards came close with a header that narrowly missed, while the hosts dominated possession with 75 percent of the ball during the opening 45 minutes.

Paraguay finds a lifeline, but Reyna ends the fight

The second half brought a slight shift.

With Pulisic withdrawn at halftime, the United States became more cautious and allowed Paraguay greater opportunities to attack.

The visitors finally created a meaningful opening when Julio Enciso collected the ball near the edge of the box and played in Brazil-born substitute Mauricio, who calmly finished to reduce the deficit.

For a brief moment, Paraguay had hope.

That hope disappeared in stoppage time.

Reyna delivered the final highlight of the night, striking the ball with the outside of his right foot and bending it perfectly inside the far post to restore the three-goal advantage.

It was a fitting finish to a night of attacking brilliance.

Hollywood spectacle matches the football

The action on the field followed an opening ceremony designed for Los Angeles.

A star-filled line-up featuring Katy Perry, Future, Tyla, Anitta and Lisa brought a festival atmosphere before kickoff.

Performers surrounded the giant World Cup trophy as the ceremony embraced the entertainment culture of its host city.

Among the sold-out crowd of 70,492 were Hollywood figures including Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Paris Hilton.

The only concern for the United States was the condition of Pulisic, whose influence remains central to the team’s hopes of reaching the later stages of the competition for the first time since their 2002 quarter-final run.

Still, the message from Los Angeles was unmistakable.

The hosts have arrived, and they arrived loudly.
