Acknowledging the pivotal role played by United States (US) travel agents in showcasing Jamaica as a premier tourist destination, Tourism Minister Hon. Edmund Bartlett expressed gratitude for their relentless efforts in driving tourism to the island.

Addressing a luncheon hosted by the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) to honor top travel agents from Baltimore and Philadelphia, Minister Bartlett extended his appreciation to the esteemed group gathered at McCormick & Schmick’s restaurant in downtown Baltimore on Friday, April 12.

Sustaining tourism amid challenges

Emphasizing the significant contribution of travel agents and tour operators to Jamaica’s tourism sector, Minister Bartlett highlighted that approximately 70 per cent of all visitors to the island hail from the US, constituting its largest source market.

Thriving beyond pre-pandemic levels

Citing encouraging statistics, Minister Bartlett revealed that Jamaica’s tourism industry has not only rebounded but surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with 2023 witnessing a remarkable influx of approximately 4 million visitors and gross foreign exchange earnings totaling approximately US$4.2 billion.

Surge in stopover arrivals

Underscoring the resilience of Jamaica’s tourism sector, Minister Bartlett noted a surge in stopover arrivals, accounting for approximately 70 per cent of total visitor arrivals, signaling a robust recovery and growth trajectory.

US market dominance

Of the 2.98 million stopover arrivals, more than 2.1 million originated from the US market, illustrating a significant increase over previous years and reaffirming the enduring allure of Jamaica among American travelers.

Milestone achievements in 2024

Celebrating recent milestones, Minister Bartlett announced that Jamaica had achieved the remarkable feat of welcoming one million visitors and earning one billion dollars in gross foreign exchange earnings during the initial two months of 2024, underscoring the island’s popularity as a favored winter escape for tourists from key source markets like the US and Canada.
