US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to join high-level meeting on Haiti in Jamaica

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to attend a high-level meeting today in Jamaica, focusing on the ongoing crisis in Haiti.

The US State Department announced Blinken’s participation, highlighting the urgency of addressing Haiti’s political and security challenges.

Discussion on proposal with CARICOM and Haitian stakeholders

The meeting aims to deliberate on a proposal crafted in collaboration with CARICOM and Haitian stakeholders.

This proposal seeks to expedite a political transition in Haiti through the establishment of a broad-based, independent presidential college.

Additionally, the deployment of a Multinational Security Support Mission will be discussed to tackle the escalating security crisis in Haiti.

Bilateral discussions with Jamaica

During his visit to Kingston, Secretary Blinken will engage in bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

These discussions will encompass a range of bilateral and regional issues, emphasizing the enduring ties between the United States and Jamaica.

International engagement

In a concerted effort to address the crisis in Haiti comprehensively, CARICOM heads have extended invitations to key international partners.

The United Nations, France, Canada, and Brazil are among the invited parties to participate in today’s critical meeting.

It is unclear whether Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry will be in Jamaica.

Persistent efforts for transitional unity government

According to reports, members of the CARICOM regional trade bloc have been trying for months to get political actors in Haiti to agree to form an umbrella transitional unity government

Jamaica’s role in hosting the meeting aligns with its ongoing involvement in Caricom’s response to the Haitian situation, including advocacy for increased international support for the United Nations Security Council-sanctioned Multinational Security Support Mission to Haiti.

Through collaborative efforts and international engagement, stakeholders are striving to chart a path toward stability and prosperity for Haiti amidst its tumultuous political landscape.
