US and Brazil to convene amidst G20 for crucial talks on Haiti crisis

The United States and Brazil are to meet on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers meeting in Brazil to address the escalating turmoil in Haiti.

UN pushes for action amidst crisis

Speaking at a press briefing, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric outlined the purpose of Thursday’s meeting, emphasizing its role in galvanizing support for the Multinational Security Support mission in Haiti, which gained approval from the UN Security Council.

High-level engagement on the horizon

Expected to be a focal point of the discussions, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, slated to attend the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting in Brazil, will be actively engaged in the high-level talks.

The meeting will be held under the theme “Rising to the Challenge on Haiti.”

Urgent call for support

Mr. Dujarric reiterated the gravity of the crisis, highlighting Ms. Mohammed’s intended emphasis on the critical need for security reinforcement and broader assistance for Haiti in the face of escalating violence and instability.

She will also stress the importance of predictable and sufficient financial contributions for the multinational security force.

The urgency of the situation is compounded by recent setbacks, notably the Kenya High Court’s ruling against the deployment of troops to Haiti as part of the Multinational Security Support mission.
