The British Virgin Islands government has received two bids for the first phase of the expansion of Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer has announced.

Rymer said the bids were opened on September 30 and will now be reviewed by an evaluation team.

Speaking on Virgin Islands Voice, Rymer said the first phase involves extending the airport runway by 787 feet at its western end.

He did not identify the companies that submitted bids or disclose the value of their proposals, saying the government would provide more information after the evaluation process is completed.

The tender was issued by the BVI Airports Authority in May, inviting companies and joint ventures to submit proposals for the western runway extension at the airport on Beef Island.

The proposed contract includes the design, construction, completion, testing and commissioning of the extension, along with the correction of any defects.

Rymer’s announcement came as Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley discussed the government’s infrastructure priorities and the competing demands on public finances, including the work needed to expand the airport.

The broader airport expansion project has been under discussion between the BVI government and the United Kingdom for several years because of questions surrounding financing and the territory’s borrowing limits.

In February, Wheatley said the UK was reviewing the project’s business case. He said the proposed borrowing would exceed the territory’s debt ratios and that the government was awaiting UK approval before proceeding to the next stage of procurement.

Wheatley also said the government planned to release information from the business case after determining which sections would need to be redacted to protect the integrity of the tender process.

The 787-foot runway extension is the first phase of the wider airport expansion project.
