Tragic tunnel collapse in Dominican Republic claims at least 9 lives

In a tragic turn of events, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, witnessed the deadly collapse of a concrete wall in a tunnel on a bustling avenue on Saturday. 

The collapse, which resulted in the loss of at least nine lives, came as heavy rains and floods battered the west of the Caribbean. 

Circumstances leading to the catastrophe

The wall, integral to the city’s infrastructure designed for traffic efficiency, gave way in the late hours of Saturday afternoon. 

This incident occurred despite prior alerts from emergency agencies, with many vehicles still navigating the avenue.

Challenges faced in rescue operations

Compounding the difficulties faced by rescue teams, damaged pipes in the vicinity flooded the tunnel. 

This influx of water created additional hurdles, hampering the efforts to reach those trapped. Rescue teams faced a grim situation, with the collapse having claimed multiple lives.

Casualties and damage

The collapse proved catastrophic, with a total of nine casualties reported in the incident. 

Among the deceased were five males and four females, according to reports.

Several vehicles were crushed under the fallen concrete structure, highlighting the sheer magnitude of the disaster. 

Reports are that the concrete wall crushed several vehicles circulating at the time in the center of the Dominican Republic’s capital. 

At the same time, floods swept away vehicles and drowned houses and people in the western part of the city.
