Teen expected to face murder charge in fatal Deerfield Beach shooting

Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office V.I.P.E.R. (Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) Unit have arrested a 14-year-old on a charge of attempted murder.

According to reports Shortly after 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 28, Broward Sheriff’s Office Deerfield Beach district deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to a shooting call near the 400 block of Southwest Second Street in Deerfield Beach. At the scene, deputies learned 16-year-old Ricky Ferguson Jr. had been shot.

Paramedics transported Ferguson to an area hospital for treatment.

Through investigative means, detectives identified the 14-year-old as the shooter, and he was located and taken into custody Friday evening, December 30. At that time, he faced one count of attempted second-degree murder.

Since that time Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide detectives said Ricky Ferguson Jr died from his injuries and his body has been transported from the hospital to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Detectives said the Broward County State Attorney’s Office is expected to upgrade the attempted second-degree murder charge to murder.
