According to Miramar Police, the student was caught with the weapon after a metal detector was triggered as they entered the school, located at 3601 SW 89th Avenue. The school’s security team quickly confiscated the gun without incident. Officials confirmed that no ammunition was found in the student’s possession.
School officials emphasized that there were no threats made toward the school, students, or staff during the incident.
In a message to parents and guardians, Miramar High School Principal Winfred Porter praised the swift action of the security team and reassured families that safety protocols worked as intended.
"This morning, our security team safely confiscated a weapon that was found in the possession of one of our students. The weapon was secured without incident once the metal detector was activated, and the student was taken into custody by police. I want to assure you this situation did not involve any threats toward our school, students or staff. The student will face appropriate school disciplinary measures," Porter wrote.
The identity of the student has not been released, and police said the investigation into how the firearm ended up in the student's possession is ongoing. Authorities have not announced what charges, if any, the student will face.
Principal Porter also urged parents to have conversations with their children about the serious consequences of bringing weapons or banned items onto school campuses.
"School safety is everyone’s responsibility. Parents are encouraged to remind your child(ren) about the severe consequences of bringing weapons or other banned items onto school campuses, and if you see something, to say something," he reminded families.
Students at Miramar High said they were relieved that the metal detectors — implemented in Broward County high schools in 2024 — worked exactly as intended, preventing a potentially dangerous situation.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
