Two separate illegal street takeover incidents early Sunday morning left three civilians injured and a Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputy with minor burns, according to authorities.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office said deputies from the Midwest and Northwest Districts responded to multiple reports of street takeovers at different intersections across northwest Miami-Dade during the early hours of Sunday, July 5.
In the first incident, around 1:23 a.m. near Northwest 77th Court and Northwest 169th Street, a deputy responding to the scene was injured after a suspect allegedly launched a live firework directly toward law enforcement. The device exploded near the deputy, causing a minor burn to the hand. The suspects fled the area northbound in unknown vehicles.
Roughly two hours later, at approximately 3:39 a.m., deputies responded to another street takeover at Northwest 25th Street and Northwest 76th Avenue, where three people were injured in a hit-and-run crash involving a black pickup truck with front-end damage.
When deputies arrived, they, along with officers from the City of Doral Police Department, provided immediate medical assistance. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported all three victims to hospital.
The driver of the pickup truck fled the scene and remains at large.
Investigators said both incidents remain under active investigation and are asking witnesses or anyone with information about the suspect vehicles or individuals involved to contact authorities or Crime Stoppers.
Officials said the cases highlight ongoing concerns about illegal street takeovers, which can quickly escalate into dangerous and unpredictable situations for both participants and responding officers.
