State of emergency declared in sections of Belize

Amid a surge in gang-related activity, Governor General, Dame Froyla Tzalam, has declared a state of emergency (SOE) in southside Belize City and select sections of the Cayo District.

The move has drawn both attention and scrutiny, prompting responses from key figures like Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams.

Commissioner Williams, while welcoming the decision, has made it clear that the SOE should not be interpreted as a sign of police failure in tackling crime.

He emphasizes that the measure is aimed at curbing violence and targeting specific individuals involved in criminal activities rather than a broad stroke against communities.

Addressing concerns: Upholding human rights

In response to concerns about potential human rights violations, Williams defends the SOE, asserting that the greater good must be considered.

He argues that the rights of the majority should not be compromised for the sake of a minority engaged in criminal behavior.

Williams highlights ongoing efforts to provide alternative pathways for at-risk youth and insists that the police are not neglecting their duty to protect citizens’ rights.

Ensuring security without compromise

The Police Commissioner stresses the delicate balance between maintaining public safety and respecting individual liberties.

He acknowledges the challenges faced by law enforcement in a society where some individuals choose a path of violence despite efforts to steer them away.

Williams asserts that the police cannot be held solely responsible for addressing societal failures that contribute to criminal behavior.

Parental responsibility

Williams points out the crucial role of parental responsibility in addressing crime. He highlights instances where parents are aware of their children’s involvement in illegal activities but fail to intervene until law enforcement becomes involved.

Williams emphasizes the need for realism in addressing these issues and urges parents to take ownership of their children’s actions.
