Stand Up Jamaica hails resilient survivors of abuse, discrimination and injustice on International Women’s Day
Stand Up Jamaica, a local lobby group has praised survivors of abuse, discrimination, and injustices as the world commemorates International Women’s Day this year.
Carla Gullota, the executive director, emphasized the importance of recognizing women making significant strides in advancing women’s rights and inclusivity and those courageously battling against various forms of oppression.
Despite this progress, Gullota emphasized that significant challenges persist.
She highlighted the alarming prevalence of cases involving the killing, beating, raping, and other forms of violation against women.
Addressing root causes of gender-based violence
Gullota underscored the urgent need to address the root causes of gender-based violence, particularly the toxic notions of male supremacy and dominance that perpetuate abuse.
She stressed the importance of educating men and women about healthy relationships based on mutual respect, understanding, and dialogue.
Empowering survivors and enhancing legal protections
In addition to awareness campaigns, Gullota advocated for greater support for survivors, including access to shelters and a robust legal system that prioritizes their safety and autonomy.
She welcomed recent amendments to the Domestic Violence Act, which increased penalties for breaches of protection orders, signaling progress in the fight against domestic abuse.
A call to action
As International Women’s Day is celebrated worldwide, Gullota urged collective action to safeguard women’s rights and provide them equal opportunities and remuneration.
She emphasized the significance of tangible steps, including legislative reforms and societal shifts, to create a safer and more equitable environment for all women.
