St. Kitts Tourism Authority applauds Jamaica’s pioneering resilience efforts

Ellison Thompson, the Chief Executive Officer of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, has expressed high regard for Jamaica’s proactive efforts in global tourism resilience.

Speaking with JIS News, he noted that Jamaica, under the guidance of its Tourism Minister, Edmund Bartlett, has been influential in leading the charge towards tourism resilience across the Caribbean.

Strategic initiatives bolster regional tourism

During the 42nd Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) Caribbean Travel Marketplace event held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, Thompson highlighted the strategic initiatives spearheaded by Jamaica.

These initiatives have been pivotal in setting sustainable benchmarks and hosting vital conferences that attract global experts.

These efforts are aimed at shaping policies that propel the tourism sector forward.

Jamaica’s proactive measures during the pandemic

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Jamaica implemented key measures that not only preserved but also swiftly recovered its tourism sector.

The international community recognized these efforts, leading to the island being spotlighted for its adaptive strategies during such unprecedented times.

Establishing a legacy of resilience

In a significant achievement, Jamaica led a successful campaign to have February 17 recognized by the United Nations as Global Tourism Resilience Day.

The observance of this day aims to enhance awareness and consolidate global efforts towards sustainable tourism practices.

The Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre, established as part of these resilience efforts, marks a cornerstone in Jamaica's long-term strategy to fortify its tourism sector against potential crises.

Future-proofing Caribbean tourism

Looking ahead, Thompson outlined ongoing efforts to ensure that the Caribbean remains a sustainable tourist destination.

By analyzing effective practices from the pandemic’s peak, the region is preparing to maintain its vibrancy and resilience in the face of future global disruptions.

Regional collaboration at CHTA marketplace

The CHTA Marketplace event, which ran from May 20 to 23, served as a crucial platform for tourism stakeholders.

Representatives from across the Caribbean, including Thompson, took this opportunity to discuss the current state and future prospects of tourism in their respective countries.

The event also facilitated direct interactions between Caribbean tourism suppliers and global wholesalers, strengthening ties and promoting Caribbean vacation travel.
