Spice sector booms: Investors eye lucrative opportunities in Jamaica

In the quest for promising investment avenues within the thriving global spice industry, attention is now turning towards the potential of local production in ginger, turmeric, and pimento.

Dr. Ronald Blake, Chief of Party for the Food for Progress Jamaica Spices (JaSpice) Project, underscores the significance of ginger and turmeric, highlighting their extensive applications in both nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals.

Asserting the profitability of these crops, Dr. Blake emphasizes the sustained growth in demand, particularly for ginger and turmeric.

Moreover, Jamaica stands as a notable producer of pimento, presenting an opportunity to optimize underutilized lands.

Revitalizing the local spice sector

Launched in 2023, the five-year JaSpice Project sets its sights on elevating yields of turmeric, ginger, and pimento to meet burgeoning export and domestic requirements.

Dr. Blake advocates for broader participation in spice production, framing it as an inclusive opportunity open to individuals from diverse backgrounds, including women, youth, indigenous communities, and investors.

Timing is emphasized, with early involvement touted as pivotal for reaping rewards in the evolving market landscape.

Impacting agriculture and beyond

Spearheaded by Agricultural Cooperative Development International/Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance (ACDI/VOCA), the JaSpice Project anticipates significant reach, targeting over 7,500 farmers and stakeholders, including marginalized groups.

Embracing climate-resilient farming techniques and enhanced management strategies across 2,250 hectares, the initiative aims for a sustainable 50 per cent boost in yields.

With a focus on enhancing relationships across the value chain, the project aligns with broader objectives of enhancing agricultural productivity and bolstering trade.

Collaborative endeavors for success

Critical to its success, the JaSpice Project leverages established partnerships with key public-sector entities.

Collaboration with the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA), Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), and Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) reinforces its strategic positioning for impactful outcomes.
