A World Cup career unlike any other came to a heartbreaking conclusion Monday as Spain struck in the dying moments to eliminate Portugal 1-0, ending Cristiano Ronaldo’s final pursuit of football’s biggest prize.

Substitute Mikel Merino emerged as the unlikely hero, scoring in the opening minute of second-half stoppage time to propel Spain into the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010.

For Portugal, the defeat marked the end of an era, closing the World Cup chapter for the all-time leader in international goals and appearances.

Merino seizes his moment

The decisive play unfolded moments after Merino had been fouled deep inside Portugal’s half.

While Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva paused to dispute the referee’s decision, Merino quickly restarted play by laying the ball off before sprinting into the penalty area. Ferran Torres spotted the run and delivered a perfectly weighted return pass, allowing the Arsenal midfielder to calmly beat goalkeeper Diogo Costa and spark jubilant celebrations among the Spanish players.

Merino had entered only five minutes earlier, but his awareness and composure produced the defining moment of the match.

The goal capped an inspiring comeback for the midfielder, whose place in Spain’s squad had been uncertain because of injuries that also disrupted portions of Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning campaign.

Ronaldo’s final World Cup ends without one last breakthrough

Portugal entered the match hoping to reach consecutive World Cup quarter-finals for the first time, with Ronaldo seeking one final deep tournament run.

Instead, the 41-year-old icon saw his remarkable World Cup journey come to an end.

Ronaldo arrived at the tournament as international football’s all-time leader with 146 goals in 233 appearances and added three more goals during the competition. Against Spain, however, opportunities were scarce.

His best chance came in the 37th minute after João Félix’s header glanced off goalkeeper Unai Simón’s shoulder and floated invitingly into the air. Reacting instinctively, Ronaldo attempted an acrobatic backward flick, but the effort lacked enough power to beat Simón, who recovered quickly to make the save.

Spain’s defensive wall stands firm

Spain’s disciplined defensive performance once again proved decisive.

Simón extended his remarkable World Cup shutout streak to 609 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal, while La Roja became the first nation ever to record six straight clean sheets in a single World Cup campaign.

Portugal threw everything forward during eight minutes of added time after Merino’s breakthrough, desperately searching for an equalizer.

Bernardo Silva came agonizingly close with a late header that sailed just over the crossbar, but Spain remained composed to preserve the victory.

Historic rivalry produces another memorable chapter

The latest meeting between the Iberian rivals added another dramatic chapter to a rivalry spanning more than a century, dating back to their first international meeting in Madrid 105 years ago.

This encounter stood in stark contrast to their unforgettable World Cup clash eight years earlier, when Ronaldo produced the only World Cup hat trick of his career in a thrilling 3-3 group-stage draw widely regarded as one of the tournament’s greatest matches.

It also echoed their previous World Cup knockout meeting in 2010, when Spain defeated Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16 before going on to capture its only World Cup title.

The two nations had met as recently as last year’s UEFA Nations League final, where Portugal prevailed after a dramatic 2-2 draw and penalty shootout.

This time, however, Spain delivered the decisive blow, extending its World Cup journey while bringing one of the sport’s most celebrated international careers to an emotional close.
