Election officials in South Florida are stepping up efforts to encourage voter registration and participation ahead of the November general election, with initiatives targeting voters across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
The supervisors of elections for the three counties will hold their first joint news conference on Wednesday, Sept. 23, as part of a regional effort to encourage eligible residents to register, learn about their voting options and cast ballots in the Nov. 3 election.
Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections Alina Garcia, Broward County Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott and Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Wendy Sartory Link will participate in the event, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Broward County Supervisor of Elections headquarters in Fort Lauderdale.
The initiative comes ahead of Florida's Oct. 5 voter registration deadline and is focused on voter education and participation in local, state and federal races.
Scott noted that turnout tends to decline in nonpresidential election years, even though decisions made by state and local officials can have a significant effect on residents' daily lives.
He encouraged voters to make a plan for how they intend to participate, whether by mail, during early voting or at their assigned polling place on Election Day.
Link said the three counties are working together to promote voter registration and education, while Garcia said the region has particular significance because about one in four registered Florida voters lives in Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach counties.
The tri-county campaign follows a separate Miami-Dade initiative aimed at increasing electoral participation among neurodiverse residents.
Garcia and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Raquel Regalado are scheduled to join community leaders and advocates on Monday, Sept. 21, for a news conference focused on encouraging eligible neurodiverse residents to vote.
The initiative will highlight voting accessibility and efforts to ensure residents can participate independently and confidently. Miami-Dade provides voting options for residents with disabilities, including accessible voting systems at polling locations.
“Our priority is to deliver secure, accurate and accessible elections for every voter, and that commitment extends to members of our neurodiverse community who want to participate, contribute and make their voices heard through the power of the vote,” Garcia said.
Regalado said government decisions involving transportation, education, housing and health care directly affect neurodiverse residents and argued that barriers to their participation should be removed.
“Neurodiversity should not be an obstacle to participation,” Regalado said. “Our job as elected officials is to remove the obstacles between them and the ballot, not to ask them to work harder to be heard.”
The 2026 general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3. Florida residents who are not already registered to vote have until Monday, Oct. 5, to register.
