Sint Maarten’s Governor Ajamu Baly has initiated consultations with faction leaders following recent political upheaval on the Dutch Caribbean Island.
The current coalition government, comprised of URSM/PFP/DP/NOW parties, has lost its majority in Parliament, prompting a reevaluation of its leadership structure.
Independent shift sparks government reevaluation
On May 20, 2024, a significant shift occurred when Kevin Maingrette, a Member of Parliament from the NOW party, withdrew his support for the coalition.
He declared himself an independent MP, influencing the balance of power.
This action led Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina to meet with Governor Baly and acknowledge the loss of majority support in Parliament.
The Prime Minister informed the Governor about the government’s intent to dissolve Parliament and the scheduling of snap elections.
Drafting a new political future
In response to the unfolding situation, Governor Baly received a Governing Accord on the same day from Maingrette, indicating a preliminary agreement for the formation of a new government.
This accord, signed by members of the NA and UP factions along with Maingrette, was distributed to the Chairperson of Parliament and relevant political party leaders for review.
Moving towards dissolution and elections
On the following day, Prime Minister Mercelina presented a draft National Decree aiming to dissolve Parliament by August 19, 2024, with elections slated for July 18, 2024.
In a move to manage the transition, the Prime Minister made the portfolios of the Ministers and Plenipotentiary officials available, signaling a complete governmental reset.
Governor’s decisive actions amidst uncertainty
Governor Baly ratified the draft dissolution decree, aligning with constitutional requirements, and considered the resignation requests from the governmental ministers.
He urged all ministers and officials to maintain their responsibilities to ensure governance continuity until a new government is established.
Recognizing the need for stability, Governor Baly has commenced consultations to explore the viability of forming a new government, reflecting his proactive approach to navigating Sint Maarten through this critical period.
