LONDON, England - English League Championship club Sheffield Wednesday has been fined £12,500 (US$16,150) and ordered to implement an "action plan for misconduct" following a racial abuse incident involving Jamaican and Coventry City midfielder Kasey Palmer at Hillsborough earlier this year.
The incident occurred during a Championship match between Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City in January, where Sheffield Wednesday supporter Edward Rabjohn, 21, racially abused Palmer. Rabjohn was subsequently banned from attending football matches for five years after admitting to the offense in court. Video footage clearly showed Rabjohn performing a monkey gesture directed at Palmer.
The English Football Association (FA) reported, “Sheffield Wednesday admitted that they failed to ensure their spectators and supporters (and anyone purporting to be supporters) conduct themselves in an orderly fashion during the 94th minute , and don’t use words or otherwise behave in an improper, offensive, abusive, and insulting way, with an express or implied reference to ethnic origin, color, and race.”
An independent Regulatory Commission imposed the sanction on Sheffield Wednesday following a hearing. In response, the club expressed its commitment to continuing efforts to eliminate any behavior that could tarnish its reputation.
The subject of a lifetime ban
"Following a robust investigation, the culprit was identified and subsequently brought to justice," the club stated. "In addition to the sentence imposed in a court of law, this person is now the subject of a lifetime ban from all Sheffield Wednesday fixtures and club events, with the opportunity to attend a rehabilitation program in line with the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Code of Practice for all English Football League clubs after 10 years."
Sheffield Wednesday reiterated its condemnation of the individual’s actions, emphasizing its responsibility to ensure proper conduct among its supporters. “As a community-focused, family football club, we reiterate our condemnation of the abhorrent actions of this individual. We have an ongoing responsibility to ensure that supporters and anyone purporting to be supporters conduct themselves in the right manner at all times whilst following the team, home and away.”
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by football clubs in addressing racism and ensuring a respectful and inclusive environment for all players and fans. The measures taken by Sheffield Wednesday and the FA aim to reinforce the importance of these values in the sport.
