Sharpe rides into history as first Jamaican woman to win gold at Caribbean Cycling Championships

Jamaica’s Llori Sharpe marked a significant milestone at the Caribbean Cycling Championships in Georgetown, Guyana, by becoming the first Jamaican woman to secure a gold medal in the Elite Women’s Road Race.
The championships concluded over the weekend, celebrating Sharpe’s historic accomplishment and underscoring her skill and determination.
Under the guidance of Coach Carlton Simmonds, the Jamaican team demonstrated resilience across the two-day competition. Sharpe’s victory came through a calculated performance, conserving energy before making a powerful surge in the final kilometer to overtake the leading group. Bermuda’s Gabriella Arnold and Guadeloupe’s Berenice Paul completed the podium with silver and bronze, respectively.
Teammates faced mixed outcomes
Despite nearly missing additional hardware, Sharpe delivered a strong finish in the 18 km time trial, coming within 30 seconds of the bronze medal.
However, her teammates faced mixed outcomes. Competing in the Under-23 division, Damine Douglas experienced an equipment setback due to a flat tyre, affecting his performance and placing him 12th overall. In the Elite Men’s race, Andrew Ramsay secured 24th place, while Obrian Madourie had to withdraw from the competition before the finish line.
In the men’s event, Cory Williams of Belize captured the championship, followed by silver medalist Jesus Cespedes of the Dominican Republic and bronze medalist John Briton of Guyana.
