The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has issued a Severe Weather Alert for the island.

The alert, which will remain effective until 5:00 a.m. Tuesday morning warns of a potential weather phenomenon that could disrupt normal life on the island.

Impending weather system

Meteorologists are keeping a close eye on a large area of low-pressure which is expected to emerge over the southwestern Caribbean Sea by mid-week.

Reports are that this area of disturbed weather has a moderate probability to become a tropical depression and move northeastward across the western and central Caribbean Sea.

According to the Met Service, the island is likely to experience severe weather in the event the system develops as projected.
