Following recent actions by law enforcement, Miami-Dade County School Board Member Roberto J. Alonso has introduced a board item seeking a full, independent audit of the district’s School Bus Safety Program.

This follows a temporary pause in enforcement announced by the Miami-Dade Sheriff. Alonso is pushing for a transparent review of how the program operates, emphasizing the critical role it plays in student safety.

Last month, Miami-Dade County suspended its School Bus Safety Citation Program effective immediately, following the discovery of significant system errors that impacted drivers' ability to properly respond to traffic violations.  The program, which launched on May 8, 2024, used cameras mounted on school buses to catch drivers illegally passing stopped buses or speeding near them.

While it aimed to increase student safety, Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said the initiative was marred by issues with uniform traffic citations and notices of violation — some of which incorrectly listed a $225 fine.

“While the original intent of this initiative was to enhance student safety using advanced technology, recent developments have raised valid concerns that must be addressed head-on,” said Alonso. “We owe it to our families, students, and school personnel to ensure that this program is functioning legally, ethically, and effectively.”

The School Bus Safety Program uses camera-based systems installed on buses to catch drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses displaying stop signals. Under Florida law, such violations carry a $200 civil fine and may be enforced through third-party vendors responsible for detection and administrative services.

Alonso’s proposal instructs the School Board’s Chief Auditor to examine the program in detail—including procurement procedures, vendor selection, contract execution, and financial oversight. The audit will also assess how revenue from the program has been handled and whether the program’s outcomes align with its intended safety goals. Additionally, the audit will consider how current or potential legal changes could impact the program’s enforcement or authority.

“This is about restoring public trust and ensuring we are doing everything in our power to protect students safely and responsibly,” Alonso stated. “We are taking a proactive approach—not only to address the concerns that have been raised but also to ensure this program meets the highest standards of transparency and accountability.”

Alonso stressed that the audit should be viewed as a positive step to reinforce the program’s integrity and its original mission of protecting students.

“We have heard from parents, educators, and community leaders. Now it’s time for action. A thorough audit will allow us to move forward with clarity, confidence, and a renewed commitment to doing what’s right.”
