The Government of Saint Lucia has officially launched its Newborn Grant Program, providing a one-time payment of EC$1,000 to mothers of eligible newborns as part of efforts to support families and improve early childhood care.
The program took effect on Saturday, August 1, 2026, following a commitment made by Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre in the 2026/2027 Budget.
The announcement was made by Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Melissa Paul during Monday’s pre-Cabinet briefing. The grant applies only to babies born on or after August 1, 2026. To qualify, the child’s birth must be registered at the Civil Status Registry within six months of birth.
Government officials said the initiative is intended to help families manage the immediate costs associated with caring for a newborn, including expenses related to baby supplies, nutrition, transportation, and other basic needs during the first months of a child’s life.
“This is about ensuring that more children in Saint Lucia are given a healthy start from the very beginning. By reducing immediate financial pressures on families, we are strengthening households and investing in the country’s future,” Prime Minister Pierre said.
The Newborn Grant is part of the government’s broader social protection program and complements existing maternal and child healthcare services, including free laboratory testing, ultrasound services for expectant mothers, and community healthcare programs aimed at improving outcomes for mothers and babies.
The initiative is among several family-focused measures introduced under the 2026/2027 Budget. Other measures include the removal of value-added tax (VAT) on essential food items, expanded support through the School Feeding Program, and increased assistance for pensioners.
The government also announced plans to review parental leave provisions and the Affiliation (Maintenance) Act as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen support systems for families.
