Saint Lucia gears up for landmark Caribbean Cannabis Forum

Today, March 20, Saint Lucia stands on the cusp of a historic moment as it moves closer to finalizing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the establishment of a Caribbean Cannabis Forum.

This significant step forward was announced amidst the backdrop of Saint Lucia’s inaugural Regional Cannabis Symposium, orchestrated by the Ministry of Commerce.

Spearheading regional cannabis conversations

Dylan Inglis, Senior Legal Officer in the Ministry of Commerce, heralds the impending MOU as a pivotal stride towards fostering ongoing discussions among Caribbean nations regarding comprehensive cannabis legislation for Saint Lucia.

Emphasizing collaboration with regional counterparts, Inglis articulates Saint Lucia’s commitment to crafting a resilient framework that not only addresses multifaceted concerns but also nurtures a sustainable cannabis industry.

Inglis sheds light on the symposium’s educational thrust, mentioning a lecture by Dr. Gerald Thompson from St. Vincent.

Dr. Thompson’s discourse, centered on cannabis, cannabinoids, and their healthcare applications, underscores the symposium’s commitment to disseminating knowledge and insights crucial for informed decision-making.

Engaging stakeholders

Emma Hippolyte, Chair of Saint Lucia’s Cannabis Task Force, stresses the importance of inclusive dialogue surrounding cannabis legislation.

Recognizing the economic potential of the cannabis industry, Hippolyte advocates for measures to protect vulnerable demographics.

She emphasizes the need for educational initiatives aimed at enlightening youth about the implications of cannabis consumption, ensuring a comprehensive approach that benefits the entire nation.

Saint Lucia’s cannabis journey

Saint Lucia embarked on its cannabis reform journey in 2021, enacting two pivotal bills.

The first bill focused on expunging records of individuals previously convicted of possessing small quantities of cannabis, while the second bill decriminalized personal, private usage of cannabis in limited quantities.

Through collaborative efforts, educational initiatives, and inclusive dialogue, Saint Lucia endeavors to navigate the complex terrain of cannabis legislation, poised to shape its future and contribute to regional discourse on cannabis governance.
