The National Powerlifting Association of Jamaica Limited (NPAJ) National Deadlift Championship 2023, proudly sponsored by GraceKennedy Money Services, took center stage on September 23 at Kingston’s Fit Farm Fitness Center.

Among the formidable powerlifters was Roxroy Campbell, the reigning NPAJ Male Deadlift Champion for 2022, who showcased exceptional determination and strength to defend his title.

Campbell’s performance was nothing short of awe-inspiring. His first lift of 286.36kg (630lb) set the tone for an unforgettable competition. Undeterred by the challenge, he continued to rise, achieving a colossal 295.45kg (650lb) on his second lift.

Emphasizes his mental strength

Although his third lift at 309.09kg (680lb) was unsuccessful, it earned him 39.35 GL Points, a testament to his indomitable spirit.

In an exclusive interview with The Powerlifting Voice, Campbell opened up about his journey, training regimen and mental preparation. He emphasized his mental strength, saying: “My mental state is where my strength really is. My technique is visualizing, or better yet, manifesting that this is mine, that I’m medaling or getting a PR (personal record).”

Campbell also shared his insights on facing challenges, stating: “My main challenges are financial challenges to heat healthily, buy supplements, better yet, gym gear like knee sleeves, etc. That’s where my main challenges are. Otherwise, from that, nothing gets to me. I stay focused and ignore the bad energies.”

Wasn’t at his best

When asked about memorable moments in the competition, he remarked, “My biggest opponent came from the 105kg class. I wasn’t at my best, and I know Steffon also got 700lb in him too. Not getting my third lift, which was 680, put a little fear in me, but we gotta settle for what our body can produce on that day. Still grateful for my numbers.”

To aspiring powerlifters, Campbell offered valuable advice: Don’t fear anyone, don’t hate on anybody, show respect to those that were there before you, even after you. It’s okay not to get the results you really wanted on the day of the meets. Also, work hard: the gym is something that is all about hard work and discipline. But do listen to your body when it’s telling you how it feels: don’t ever ignore that.”

As for his future goals, Campbell aspires to become the best powerlifter and represent Jamaica at higher levels. He humorously added: “I wonder if one of these brands like Milo, LAsco, Lucozade, etc, could sponsor me? You never know!”

Roxroy Campbell’s journey embodies perseverance and passion for powerlifting. As the NPAJ Male Deadlift Champion for 2022 and 2023, he continues to inspire athletes, proving that dedication can lead to greatness. We eagerly await his next chapter in powerlifting history.
