The US Virgin Islands Department of Health (VIDOH) has reported a recent increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations affecting the territory’s two main hospitals.

The Juan F. Luis Hospital in St. Croix is currently treating three patients, with one of them requiring ventilator support.

In contrast, the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital in St. Thomas has six patients hospitalized due to the virus, though none are in need of ventilatory assistance.

Health officials urge vigilance as summer season approaches

With the anticipation of increased visitor arrivals during the upcoming summer travel season, USVI Health Commissioner Justa Encarnacion has reiterated the persistence of COVID-19 and its threats.

Encarnacion stresses the importance of continued vigilance, including frequent handwashing, using proper respiratory etiquette, and staying home when sick.

These measures are vital alongside vaccination, which remains the most effective defense against severe symptoms and the spread of the virus.

Vaccination efforts intensify amid ongoing pandemic

Public health officials have emphasized the availability of COVID-19 vaccines at no cost throughout the territory.

On St. Croix, vaccinations are offered at the Department of Health’s clinic, while on St. Thomas, adults can receive vaccines at the Community Health Clinic within the Schneider Regional Medical Centre.

St. John residents are encouraged to contact the Morris De Castro Clinic to schedule their vaccinations.

Additionally, plans are underway to facilitate vaccine access for insured individuals through private providers and urgent care facilities starting in July.

This initiative aims to bolster the territory’s defenses against a potential surge in COVID-19 cases as social activities increase.

Special considerations for at-risk populations

The health commissioner has also issued a special advisory for households with elderly members or individuals with compromised immune systems.

Those suspecting they have contracted COVID-19 are advised to exercise extreme caution, limit close contact, and wear masks to mitigate the risk of transmission to vulnerable individuals.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tai Hunte-Ceasar also recommends prompt testing for anyone exhibiting symptoms, to enable timely treatment and reduce further spread of the virus.
