Renaming of Piarco International Airport gains support in Trinidad & Tobago

In Trinidad & Tobago, a groundswell of public sentiment has surged, advocating for the renaming of Piarco International Airport to pay homage to the late former Prime Minister, Basdeo Panday.

A posthumous tribute gains momentum

As news of Basdeo Panday’s demise reverberated throughout the nation earlier this week, an idea took root in the hearts of numerous Trinidadians: renaming their primary international gateway in honor of their beloved former leader.

Social media platforms ignited with fervent discussions, some voices contending that the renaming should have taken place during Panday’s lifetime.

Public opinion elicited by the Express Newspaper

The Express Newspaper, keen to gauge public sentiment on this matter, took to social media to pose a crucial question to its readers.

The Express Newspaper asked its readers via social media yesterday if they would be on board with the airport being named the 'BasdeoPanday International Airport,' in light of Panday’s passing on Monday.

Overwhelming support for the renaming

A substantial majority of respondents voiced their support for the proposed name change, with 71 per cent of the 610 respondents rallying behind the idea.

While 29 per cent held reservations, the prevailing sentiment among the Trinidad & Tobago populace leans heavily towards honoring their late former prime minister with this symbolic gesture.
