With a crucial win needed to spark Jamaica’s 2024/25 Concacaf Nations League campaign, Reggae Boyz head coach Steve McClaren expressed confidence in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion ahead of their pivotal clash against Honduras on Tuesday night.

After a surprise goalless draw at home against Cuba last Friday, Jamaica will now face a more formidable challenge against Honduras, who recently trounced Trinidad and Tobago 4-0.

Tuesday’s encounter at 9:00 pm will see the Boyz traveling to hostile territory in Honduras, but McClaren is confident that his players are ready to handle the pressure. “We’ve got players who play in that hostile atmosphere every week in the Premier League or the Championship. I expect them to deal with that and play with composure,” McClaren said.

The Reggae Boyz boast a strong recent record against Honduras, having gone unbeaten in their last six meetings, including a 1-0 win in September 2023 and an away victory in 2021 during World Cup qualifiers. However, McClaren acknowledged the quality of Honduras, crediting head coach Reinaldo Rueda for the strides made by the Central American side.

A big challenge

“They’re a very good team, possession-based, good in transition, and strong defensively. It’s a big challenge, but I expect my players to accept and deal with it, and we’ll work to get a result,” McClaren said.

Despite their early setback, the Reggae Boyz camp remains upbeat. Defender Amari’i Bell emphasized that the squad’s confidence remains intact. “We thought we could have gotten more from the Cuba game, but we’re ready to come with full force and get the three points,” Bell said, noting that while the environment in Honduras will be tough, the team is focused on securing a win.

For McClaren, Tuesday’s game represents an important step toward qualification for the quarter-finals of the Nations League. “We need to play well and fight as a team to get a result and put us back in contention to qualify,” he said.

In squad news, there has been one change, with reserve goalkeeper Conniah Boyce-Clarke being replaced by Shaquan Davis of Mount Pleasant Football Academy.
