Jamaican football star Leon Bailey has been named in head coach Stephen McClaren's 24-man squad for the highly anticipated CONCACAF Nations League quarter-finals against the United States, marking his long-awaited return to the national team line-up.
Jamaica will first host the U.S. in Kingston on Thursday, before the series shifts stateside for the second leg on November 18.
The Reggae Boyz, under McClaren’s leadership, have struggled offensively at home, failing to score in recent matches against Cuba and Honduras. Their last home victory dates back to June, when striker Shamar Nicholson secured a 1-0 win over the Dominican Republic, a result that closed the tenure of former head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson. McClaren acknowledged the need for improvement, especially given their recent challenges.
“It’s concerning that we haven’t won at home since June,” McClaren stated, underscoring the importance of bolstering their offense. “We need to find ways to be more threatening on the field. In our first game against Cuba, we created 27 chances, many of them very solid, so I wasn’t too worried initially. However, the match against Honduras was disappointing. It seemed neither team wanted to risk a loss, given the standings. But moving forward, we need a major shift in how we attack to turn the National Stadium back into ‘The Office.’”
Lingering injuries
Bailey’s return comes after he missed two international windows due to lingering injuries. Following his recovery, he has resumed full matches with Aston Villa, including a recent 65-minute appearance against Liverpool in the EPL. McClaren expressed enthusiasm for the forward's renewed form. “Leon was so unlucky to miss the first two camps, battling niggles along the way. Now, he’s fully fit and eager to join the squad. I told him, ‘Finally, we’ll see Leon Bailey,’ and he’s thrilled to be back,” said McClaren.
Isaac Hayden, the midfielder currently with Newcastle in the English Premier League, is set to make his debut for Jamaica after accepting his first call-up to the Reggae Boyz. With this squad, McClaren aims to inject fresh energy and experience as he enters his third team selection since stepping into the role in August.
