“They will be hungrier this time to get a good result. Another bad result for them will almost put them out of the competition,” Speid said.
“I think this will be our hardest match yet and they are going to leave everything on the pitch, but we are prepared for it.”
Honduras expected to adjust
Honduras exposed defensive vulnerabilities in its loss to Suriname, but Speid does not expect Jamaica to encounter precisely the same team tonight.
The coaching staff has repeatedly reviewed the match, while Honduras will have had its own opportunity to identify and correct its mistakes.
“We have looked at it (game against Suriname) over and over, but every match is different. They will have also looked at their mistakes and try to adjust,” Speid said.
“I do not expect to see exactly the same team, but we are creatures of habits and I suspect there would be some semblance of what we spoke about coming into the game.”
Honduras' recent record provides little comfort. The team has drawn two and lost three of its last five matches, with its most recent victory coming almost a year ago in a 3-0 win over Haiti on October 13, 2025.
But Speid is placing little emphasis on that run or Jamaica's recent success against the Hondurans.
The Boyz are unbeaten in their last eight meetings with Honduras, including four victories and a draw in their last five encounters. Their most recent meeting in Kingston, in the 2024 Nations League, ended 0-0.
Speid dismisses home advantage
Although Jamaica is playing at home and Honduras had to travel after Friday's match, Speid does not believe the circumstances give the Boyz a significant advantage.
He pointed instead to the Hondurans' higher ranking and the modern methods available to professional teams for recovery between matches.
“There is not much of an advantage. With modern technology and modern science, people know how to recover and they are a good team. They are ranked higher than us,” he said.
“I don’t think there is a big advantage. We have to go on the pitch and play as hard as we can to try and get a positive result.”
Tactical questions after Guatemala test
Jamaica's opening victory was accompanied by some defensive concerns after Speid deployed an unfamiliar 3-5-2 formation.
The Boyz conceded twice against Guatemala but produced three goals, including Rumarn Burrell's second-half strike, which Speid highlighted as a particularly significant moment.
“I thought the manner we scored the goals, they were really good goals. Rumarn [Burrell] scored a goal that we haven’t seen from Jamaica for a very long time,” he said.
“That was the positive for me, the quality of the goals. It was just good all around, on the offensive side, we were really good.”
Speid said the formation itself was not necessarily responsible for the defensive problems.
“I don’t know if the back three itself was a problem,” he said. “I just think that we probably didn’t execute as well as we should but our coaching staff is up to it. We have seen where there are issues and we will try and fix those.”
Whether Jamaica retains the same starting lineup and the same tactical structure will therefore be one of the key questions when the teams take the field.
Quarterfinal race
The stakes extend beyond Monday night's three points.
Jamaica is seeking to finish among the top two teams in Group B and advance to the Nations League quarterfinals, where the group’s qualifiers will face one of Mexico, the United States, Canada or Panama.
A second consecutive victory would strengthen Jamaica's position with three group matches still to play, while another defeat for Honduras would leave the Central Americans facing an increasingly difficult route forward.
For Speid, however, the equation is straightforward: the Boyz must match Honduras' urgency and execute better than they did defensively against Guatemala.
The message is clear ahead of kickoff: Jamaica cannot expect its recent record against Honduras or home advantage to decide the contest. The Boyz will have to earn another result on the field.
