In a statement marking the fourth anniversary of the March 2, 2020, General and Regional Elections, Guyana’s president Dr. Irfaan Ali underscored his unwavering dedication to maintaining peace and stability in the country.

Dr. Ali, the Head-of-State, shared his reflections in a video posted on Facebook last Saturday, recalling the tumultuous period surrounding the 2020 General and Regional Elections and its aftermath, emphasizing the difficulties the nation faced.

Government’s focus on citizen welfare

Addressing the nation, President Ali articulated the government’s mission to pursue the best outcomes for all citizens.

He highlighted a comprehensive approach aimed at improving the lives of every segment of society, including pensioners, farmers, public servants, teachers, and workers in industries such as sugar and bauxite.

Call for resumption of dialogue with teachers

Expressing concern over the ongoing strike action by teachers across the country since February 5, President Ali urged for constructive dialogue between the government and the Guyana Teacher’s Union (GTU) to resume.

He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the welfare of educators while cautioning against allowing political agendas to obstruct the negotiation process.

Mediation talks underway

Despite the stalemate between the GTU and the Ministry of Education, recent mediation talks at the High Court involving officials from both sides, accompanied by legal representatives, signify a potential path towards resolution.

Government’s efforts and commitments

President Ali highlighted the government’s extensive engagement with the GTU, having met 25 times and fulfilled 30 out of 41 requests from the union, in addition to providing 28 non-requested benefits.

He reiterated the administration’s commitment to democratic principles and emphasized the need to respect institutional processes.

Development initiatives in Hinterland Communities

Underscoring the government’s holistic approach to national development, President Ali emphasized ongoing transformation efforts in hinterland communities.

He outlined a multifaceted strategy aimed at addressing various challenges and promoting inclusive growth across the country.

Overcoming pandemic challenges

Reflecting on the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic shortly after assuming office in August 2020, President Ali commended the government’s effective response through sound governance.

He highlighted key achievements during the initial 100 days in office, including tax relief measures, job creation initiatives, and investments in agriculture, fostering confidence in the nation’s economic resilience.

Vision for the future

President Ali concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to fostering hope, expanding infrastructure, bolstering economic foundations, diversifying the economy, and investing in human capital transformation.

He emphasized the administration’s unwavering dedication to building a prosperous and equitable future for all Guyanese citizens.
