In a prestigious event that brought together luminaries from various sectors, Guyanese President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali was bestowed with the Legacy Award by the American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI).

The ceremony took place in New York City, marking a significant recognition of President Ali's efforts in nation-building and his contributions to the prosperity of Guyana and the Caribbean region.

A night of recognition

The award was presented to President Ali by Guyanese American actress CCH Pounder, who lauded the president for his unwavering commitment to his country and its future.

The accolade served not only as a token of appreciation for President Ali’s dedication but also as a beacon of hope for future generations looking to continue the path of progress he has set.

A commitment to public service and regional prosperity

In accepting the award, President Ali shared the credit with the resilient people of Guyana, whose spirit and dedication have fueled his passion for public service.

He reflected on the struggles of past generations and the importance of equitable opportunities for all.

Ali underscored his pledge to leverage Guyana’s burgeoning oil and gas wealth to foster growth and prosperity throughout the Caribbean.

He emphasized that Guyana’s success should be a tide that lifts all boats in the region, signaling a new era of mutual progress and support.

Supporting global communities

Highlighting the inherent generosity of the Guyanese people, President Ali pointed to a recent fundraising initiative that garnered over US$100,000 for Palestinians in need.

He also mentioned planned efforts to aid the people of Haiti, advocating for global solidarity and action to address the longstanding challenges faced by the Haitian community.

Advocating for reparatory justice

In his remarks, President Ali did not shy away from addressing the need for reparatory justice, a cause he noted as being close to the hearts of many in the Caribbean.

He praised the efforts of Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, in advancing this critical issue.

Ali’s call for justice and his acknowledgment of the contributions of regional leaders underscored his vision for a future built on equity, understanding, and shared prosperity.
