PAHO raises alarm as dengue surges across the Americas
Health officials from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) have sounded the alarm as Dengue fever spreads rapidly across the Americas.
With 3.5 million reported cases of tropical disease spanning from Puerto Rico to Brazil, the region faces a significant health challenge.
Unprecedented rise in cases
PAHO’s Director, Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, reveals that this year’s tally is three times higher than the number of cases reported at this same point last year.
The situation is particularly alarming given that last year already saw a record-breaking 4.5 million cases in the region, leading PAHO officials to anticipate that this year could set a new grim record.
Out-of-season surge
Traditionally, Dengue cases surge during the wet season, yet this outbreak is occurring well ahead of schedule, raising concerns among health experts.
The majority of reported cases are concentrated in the Southern Hemisphere, with over 80 per cent of infections reported in Brazil, followed by Paraguay, Argentina, Peru, and Colombia.
Rising death toll
As the outbreak intensifies, the death toll continues to climb, with approximately 1,000 reported deaths across the Americas thus far this year.
In the Caribbean alone, over 25,000 cases have been documented, with French Guiana, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic being the hardest-hit areas.
Epidemic declarations and public health emergencies
The severity of the situation has prompted action from local authorities. Puerto Rico’s health secretary recently declared an epidemic, citing over 540 reported cases, including at least 341 hospitalizations.
The situation is compounded by the fact that parts of the island are currently experiencing a moderate drought, with the rainiest month not expected until August.
In Brazil, the surge in Dengue cases led Rio de Janeiro to declare a public health emergency last month, just ahead of the country’s Carnival celebrations.
Peru swiftly followed suit, declaring public health emergencies for most of its provinces, signaling the urgency of the situation across the region.
