For the third straight day, Jamaica's coronavirus cases remain at record highs as the island logged 878 new COVID-19 infections on Sunday.

Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton made the announcement on Monday morning through the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

A breakdown of the figures from the Ministry shows that 2,696 samples were tested over a 24-hour period, for an alarmingly high positivity rate of 39 percent.

It was the third consecutive day that the country logged record new infections, following 723 cases on Saturday and 527 the day before.

The island's death toll from the coronavirus now stands at 454 following the recording of one additional COVID-related fatality Sunday, that of a 63-year-old male from St James.

The 878 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases bring the total number of cases on record for the island to 26,904.

Of the newly confirmed cases, 500 are females and 378 are males, with ages ranging from eight months to 98 years. The cases were recorded in St Catherine (187), Kingston and St Andrew (179), St Ann (88), St James (86), Clarendon (68), Manchester (58), St Thomas (56), St Elizabeth (49), Trelawny(25), Portland (25), Westmoreland (24), St Mary (17) and Hanover (16).

There are 44 moderately ill patients and 31 critically ill patients among the 11,770 active cases now under observation in Jamaica.
