A total of more than 69,000 pensioners across Guyana are receiving government support through electricity and water subsidy programs aimed at easing the cost of living for senior citizens.

According to official figures, approximately 33,274 pensioners have benefitted from the $30,000 electricity subsidy provided through Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) as of June 2026. In addition, 36,586 pensioners have received support under the water subsidy programme administered by Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), with the latest figures recorded in March 2026.

The electricity subsidy is credited directly to eligible pensioners’ GPL accounts once registration is completed in their name. The government said the benefit should be reflected on bills beginning June 2026, and encouraged recipients who do not see the credit applied to visit their nearest GPL office for assistance.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr Vindhya Persaud urged pensioners to check both electricity and water bills to ensure they are receiving the correct subsidies, noting that the programmes are designed to provide direct relief to households.

The subsidies form part of the government’s broader social protection measures targeting senior citizens, with officials saying the initiatives are intended to reduce utility costs and improve overall living standards for pensioners nationwide.
