Jamaica’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, underscored the vital role of effective school leadership in addressing violence and other challenges in educational institutions.

Speaking at a meeting with school administrators at the Iberostar Resort in Lilliput, St. James on May 17, Dr. Chang emphasized the need for a comprehensive evaluation of school leadership structures.

Broadening the scope of leadership

Dr. Chang pointed out the necessity of examining leadership from the chairman to critical support staff, stressing that a holistic approach is crucial for overcoming challenges in schools.

He highlighted the potential need to review the selection process for school board chairpersons, suggesting that effective school governance begins at the top.

The synergy between chairpersons and principals

Emphasizing the importance of collaboration, Dr. Chang noted that while the role of principals has traditionally been emphasized, a supportive chairman is equally essential for a school’s success.

He illustrated this point by referencing two schools in his St. James North Western constituency, where strong leadership has significantly improved student performance.

Case studies of success

In one school, the harmonious collaboration between the chairman and principal has positioned the institution among the best-performing schools.

Another school, which recently appointed a new principal, is beginning to see notable improvements.

These examples underscore the critical impact of effective leadership on educational outcomes.

Proactive measures for safety and respect

Dr. Chang reiterated the imperative of not overlooking leadership’s role in ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.

He called for a proactive approach to addressing violence in schools, advocating for a culture of respect and safety.

As schools navigate these challenges, the focus on robust and collaborative leadership remains a cornerstone for fostering positive change.
